The AFF A20 is the entry all-flash appliance of NetApp's current line: a controller pair with internal flash, running the same operating system and the same tooling as the larger systems above it. It is bought where an organisation wants NetApp's software — snapshots, replication, tiering, the management model — at the smallest scale that offers it. This is a very short table and that is not an omission: on this platform almost everything a buyer cares about is software, and the hardware sheet is the enclosure, the drive count and how far the cluster grows. Read the scale-out row as the real specification, because it says what the system becomes rather than what it is on day one, and a platform bought at its ceiling has nowhere to go. The drive count is the internal limit and the shape of growth follows the cluster rather than the shelf. What the appliance can actually do for you is a function of the operating-system release and the licences, which is where the sizing conversation belongs.
