Dell PowerEdge R740xd — Full Technical Specifications
The xd is the R740 with storage taken seriously: a deeper chassis, a mid-plane cage and rear bays, on the same board and the same management as the standard model. It became the default rack node for hyperconverged and software-defined storage builds in its generation, and those same estates are where the used supply comes from today. Full Specifications
Set this table beside the plain R740 one and the whole difference is in the drive-bay line — identical processors, identical memory, identical management, a different skeleton. So that is the line to read first, and to read literally: an xd built around the small-format backplane does not become the large-format one by buying caddies. The accelerator note is a genuine constraint rather than a hedge, because the chassis that holds the most drives is not the chassis that leaves room for cards. Depth and weight then decide whether it fits the cabinet you already own.
