This is the small-format enclosure in Dell's entry block-storage family: the same dual-controller architecture as its siblings, with a front face of small drives rather than large ones. It suits workloads that need spindles and fast devices rather than bulk capacity — a database, a virtualisation cluster, a mixed working set. Supplied new and built to the layout agreed with us.
Which enclosure in this family is right comes down to drive shape and count, and it is worth settling before the order rather than after.

Full Specifications
The short table here is a fair description of the product, and the row to weigh is the drive line. Small-format positions mean more devices behind the same controllers, which is what a transactional workload wants, and less raw space per pound than the large-format enclosure gives. The protocol row decides attachment and is the one hard compatibility question; direct attachment, fabric and ethernet are all supported and the cheapest correct answer depends on how many hosts there are. Self-encrypting drives appear in the drive row, which matters if there is a policy requiring them. Anything not on this list, this family does not do.
