Memory and storage supply stays tight in 2026 — server DRAM contract prices climbed steeply in Q1. (TrendForce, Jun 2026)

Supermicro, and how to read a model number.

Supermicro is the line where the model number defends itself against being read. SYS-621C-TN12R and AS-2126HS-TN describe two entirely different machines, and nothing in either string announces which is which to somebody who has not been shown the pattern.

One part of it we can state from our own catalogue rather than from a naming guide: across every Supermicro system we list, SYS- machines carry Intel Xeon processors and AS- machines carry AMD EPYC, without exception. That single letter pair is the first fork in the decision, and it is the one most listings bury.

The rest of what matters sits on the motherboard rather than in the system code. X10, X11, X12 and X13 are Intel board generations and H12 and H13 are the AMD ones; a refurbished chassis is described by its board, which is why our older Supermicro listings read CSE-846 X11DPH-T rather than as a SYS- code. The table below is what a board generation is worth.

Board generations, and what each one buys

4 steps

Figures are from the specification sheets of the Supermicro systems we list. The Intel and AMD platforms are separate ranges, not steps in one sequence.

X10

X10 (CSE-829U, X10DRU-i)

Processor
2 sockets, Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4, LGA 2011-3, Intel C612
Memory
24 DDR4 ECC slots, RDIMM/LRDIMM, up to 3 TB
Storage & I/O
12 LFF hot-swap SAS/SATA, optional NVMe U.2 with the right backplane

What changed. The E5-2600 era board — contemporary with a PowerEdge R730.

What it means. Bought for the chassis as much as the board: a 12-bay or 24-bay Supermicro shelf is a very cheap way to hold a lot of spinning disk. Not the place to start for compute.

X11

X11 (CSE-846, X11DPH-T)

Processor
2 sockets, 1st/2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable, LGA 3647, up to 205 W
Memory
16 DDR4 ECC slots, 2666/2400/2133 MT/s, up to 2 TB
Storage & I/O
24 x 3.5-inch hot-swap on the CSE-846 chassis (36 LFF plus 2 SFF on the CSE-847); 10 SATA3 onboard, SAS3 by add-on card

What changed. Socket change to Xeon Scalable; the storage chassis options grow considerably.

What it means. The generation where a Supermicro storage node becomes genuinely useful — enough cores to run the filesystem, enough bays to make it worth running.

X13

X13 (SYS-121H-TNR, SYS-621C-TN12R)

Processor
2 sockets, 4th/5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable, Socket E (LGA-4677), up to 64 cores, up to 350 W
Memory
Up to 32 DDR5 slots, up to 4 TB at 5600 MT/s (1DPC) or 8 TB at 4400 MT/s (2DPC)
Storage & I/O
SATA and NVMe with RAID 0/1/5/10; NVMe RAID needs the VROC hardware key

What changed. DDR5, a new socket, and GPU support as a designed-in configuration.

What it means. The current Intel platform. Read the GPU line on the specific model before ordering — the difference between one double-width card and six single-width ones is a chassis decision, not a later upgrade.

AS-

H13/H14 AMD (AS-2126HS-TN)

Processor
2 sockets, AMD EPYC 9005/9004, up to 384 cores in total, up to 500 W
Memory
24 DDR5 slots, up to 6 TB at 6400 MT/s (EPYC 9005)
Storage & I/O
Networking via AIOM; up to 3 double-width GPUs

What changed. The AMD range: far more cores per box and a higher power and cooling budget.

What it means. Where core count is what you are buying, this is usually the cheapest route to it. Check the site can actually deliver and remove the heat — the 500 W processor line is not a rounding difference.

What the digits inside a model code mean — chassis height, drive layout, riser configuration — is not something our own data can support, so this page does not guess at it. Send the code you are looking at and we will come back with the actual configuration sheet.

Which one for which job

Storage density before anything else

The CSE-846 and CSE-847 chassis families: 24 or 36 LFF bays in one box. The board inside decides how much CPU you get to run alongside the disks, and for a backup target or an object store that can be modest.

GPU and accelerator hosts

The GS- and GE- systems are built around the cards rather than around the drives. What you are buying is slot spacing, power delivery and airflow — specify the exact GPU model at quote time, because the supported list is per system, not per generation.

Maximum cores per rack unit

The AS- range on EPYC. A single AS- box can carry core counts that would take several Intel machines, which changes both the rack plan and, where software is licensed per socket, the licence bill.

A machine built to your exact bill of materials

This is what Supermicro is for. If the configuration you want is a specific board, a specific backplane and a specific NIC, send the parts list rather than a model code and we will price it as a build.

Questions we get about Supermicro

Across every Supermicro system in this catalogue, SYS- codes are Intel Xeon machines and AS- codes are AMD EPYC machines. It is the fastest way to tell two similar-looking codes apart, and it is the first thing to check when comparing two quotes that look like the same box.

Because that is what the machine is. A refurbished Supermicro is a chassis plus a motherboard plus what was fitted to it — CSE-846 with an X11DPH-T board describes it precisely, where a system code would imply a factory configuration that unit may no longer have. We would rather the listing be exact than tidy.

Yes, and with this brand it is the normal case rather than the exception. Send the board, the chassis, the backplane and the cards you want, or describe the workload and let us propose the parts list. Quote within 48 hours either way.

Enterprise hardware reprices daily, and no two builds of the same model cost the same — memory, drives and the controller move the number more than the chassis does. A sticker would be wrong by the time you read it. Send the model and the configuration and you get today's rate, usually inside a business day, held in the contract.

A Supermicro model that is not listed here? The catalogue shows what we hold, not the limit of what we source. Send the model, the generation or a full parts list and you get a price and a lead time inside 48 hours.
