Dell PowerVault ME5012 — Full Technical Specifications

The ME5012 is the large-format member of Dell's entry block-storage family: a dual-controller array whose front face takes capacity disks rather than fast small ones. It is the right shape when the requirement is a lot of inexpensive space behind a couple of hosts — a backup target, a video store, a departmental file service. Supplied new, configured to the layout you need.

Everything about this array is in the form-factor row and the drive row, so start there and work outward. The large-format enclosure is what makes capacity cheap and also what limits how many spindles sit behind the controllers, which is the trade being made against the small-format model in the same family. The protocol row is the compatibility gate and covers fabric, ethernet and direct attachment; direct attachment is often the correct and cheapest answer behind two hosts. Both controllers are active, which is what allows maintenance without an outage. Features beyond this short list belong to larger families, and it is better to know that now.
